Sustainable design, also referred to as "green design," eco-design," or "design for the environment," has long been a part of Jan Gleysteen's approach to architecture. Jan Gleysteen has always had a commitment to the belief of designing to comply with principles of ecomnomic, social, and ecological sustainability. Even though it is currently a growing trend, Jan Gleysteen has always held a high respect for designing architecture that combines beauty, functionality and efficiency.
Sustainable architecture attempts to reduce the colelctive environmental impacts during production of building components, during the construction process, as well as during the lifecycle of the building. This design practice emphasizes efficiency of heating and cooling systems, alternative energy sources such as solar hot water, appropriate building sitting, reused or recycled building materials, on-site power generation (solar technology, ground source heat pumps, wind power), rainwater harvesting for gardening or washing, and on-site waste management such as green roofs that filter and control stormwater runoff. Sustainable architects design with sustainable living in mind.
